Run: November 14 – 20

Last night I had a lot of trouble getting myself motivated enough to actually go for a run. I put it off all day long, and precisely when it began to get dark, I decided that I had better get in some kind of exercise.

I had my heart set on an outdoor run, but that didn’t seem to be in the cards at that point. I began to debate which sounded worse, the dreadmill or the bike trainer.

Decisions…

As I engaged in some more procrastination, Chris came in the house.

“Chris, do you want to run?”

“No.”

“Do you want to go for a run anyway?”

“Ok.”

Last night we ran with headlamps. Naturally, mine had dead batteries. I forgot my Garmin at home. Just one of those days. It was a pretty good run anyway though and I was really happy that Chris went with me. I’m not so keen on running outside in the dark alone.

For some reason headlamps conjure images of dorkiness, but I don’t think we look that dorky in them. Here we are at Mt. Fuji’s 8th Station last year in full headlamped glory. Sweet.

  • Sunday: rest <– I intended to run, but I just never got around to it. Pretty pathetic.
  • Monday: 6 miles (9:26, 9:19, 9:13, 9:07, 9:02, 8:56)
  • Tuesday: 4 miles @ 9:14
  • Wednesday: 4ish miles

I ran in downtown Chicago today. By my best estimate I ran 4 miles, but I’m not entirely sure because I was never able to get satellite reception.

Pretty ironic considering that I ran past the Garmin store and was unable to get reception even there.

I considered going into the Garmin store to talk about that, but I was trying to squeeze in a lunch time run during the work day and I couldn’t afford to waste precious minutes antagonizing the Garmin people. Plus, in general, I’m really thrilled with my Garmin.

Another note on running in Chicago, or any big city for that matter: any portion of a run that is on city streets in agonizingly choppy.

Stop. Go. Stop. Go.

This run took much longer than I expected! I don’t think I’m much of a “city person”.

  • Thursday: 4ish miles again

The ballpark estimate for this run was not due to a malfunctioning Garmin, instead it can be chalked up to a poor dashboard layout on a hotel treadmill. You know the ones where the emergency stop button is strategically placed so that you bump it with your hand every quarter mile or so?

I gave up after what I think was 4 miles. That was more than enough for me considering that it was a 4:30 am run.

  • Friday: rest
  • Saturday: 5 miles with Chris, no Garmin

Miles on Current Shoes: 206.79

  1. I have overt hissyfits whenever I accidentally bump that treadmill emergency stop button. Profanity spills out of my mouth and it attracts stares. You guys don’t look dorky in the headlamps – just intense!

      Exactly. I’m lucky that I was running solo in that hotel gym because after the second emergency stop, it began to get less humorous.

    Nice picture of you and Chris – I think you look pretty hard core!

    I don’t do well in the dark because our roads aren’t lit and I worry about careless cars, patches of ice and my general clumsy ways! If I can’t fit in lunch time runs, I mostly hit the treadmill and just try extra hard to get in daylight runs during the weekend.

    Looks like you had a good week of running. Is your foot feeling ok?

      I’m not sure about my foot. Hypochondriacal foot pain paranoia may be rearing its ugly head. Any foot discomfort, however minor, sends me full throttle into an “OMG, my foot is going to break any minute” type of despair.

      My foot feels a little off, but it is probably something that I would have ignored (not in an irresponsible way) before I broke my foot. Now I am totally freaked out about it thinking that it will break just in time for Kilimanjaro.

      We stick to our local bike path for dark runs. I guess we still run the risk of encountering careless cyclists, but the bike paths are still far safer than the streets!
